so, what makes a house a home?

a house a home playlist

song #7:
wildwoods by lighthearted

this.

the purpose

what makes a house a home exists to cause you, the reader, to pause and reflect on your own home and to celebrate the importance of found family. this project can give hope to those in search of a home, and the inspiration that a home may sneak up and surprise you.

this experience is about exploring the physical space of my house, but it’s not really about that, in the end. once you click on each item, you learn that the value of that thing comes from nothing about the thing itself (in fact, most of the items are secondhand, broken, or missing pieces), but from the memories that fill every inch of it and the people that make up those memories. it shows that you could be anywhere
— school, work, online, or in the middle of the woods — if the people you love are nearby, you're home.

the project also explores the many things that go into building memories with people — ordinary moments, sharing food together, being creative, listening to music, and so much more.

it is a celebration of the people and memories that make up my home, and hopefully an inspiration to yours.

the process

i began this project with the intention to make it very surreal, with illustrations on top of pictures of the furniture in order to convey the memories connected with them. but in the execution of this plan, i realized very quickly that the memories apart from the people who made them were meaningless. so i shifted to a focus on real pictures of the people i love because, in the end, that’s who the project is really about.

i learned so much about wix and website design through this project. one of the best parts was just getting to let loose and create. with embedded videos, photo carousels, interactive elements, and embedded webpages, i really got to bring my dreams (and home) to life.

on a personal note

this project benefitted invaluably from peer reviews and support from my classmates in engl4837, so i would like to give them a special thanks.

i would also like to thank my professor Lindsey Harding for helping me expand so much creatively and giving me a space to learn and grow so much in the areas of technology, web design, and digital storytelling.

of course, i want to thank my roommates and friends, and everyone who has ever stepped foot in our little home. without you all, this process would be completely impossible. thank you for being the reason this project was such a joy to make, and for being the reason that my past three years have been so utterly filled with joy.

I thank God for bringing these beautiful people into my life and for being with me every day. i give Him full credit for putting together all the pieces that make my house a home.

and, finally, I want to thank you — the reader — for joining me on this journey. i hope this process will bring you to pause, reflect, and notice the little joys that so often make your house, work, school, or wherever, a true home. i hope that you have a place for this kind of love and joy, and if you don't yet, it's just around the corner.
