song #2: the mortar and pestle song

a means of bonding through food and fun.

the mortar and pestle were a childhood dream of mine for years. when I finally got them, they somehow became a connection point for people in the house as well as visitors. one of their first uses was to make guacamole for a roommate dinner. we all took turns mixing the guac, so a little bit of all of our love went into it, and it was delicious.

the mortar and pestle were also key to the ‘everything waffles’ made by one of our friends. he took every random ingredient he could find in the pantry (peanut butter, jolly ranchers, protein powder, strawberries, and more unrelated things), ground them up for nearly 30 minutes in the mortar and pestle, mixed in waffle mix, and created a disgusting and hilarious creation, then proceeded to peer-pressure everyone into trying it. needless to say, we were all disgusted.

another pair of our friends wrote a song called ‘the mortar and pestle’ with their guitars and sang it for all of us with much fanfare – it was much appreciated, and we sang it in our house for weeks afterward.

this random kitchen appliance has provided us with jokes and laughter, crushed oreos and peppermint for cookies, homemade pesto, and even sweet potato gnocchi. and none of these things were made alone. just like the mortar needs the pestle to work together, this combo has come to symbolize the beauty that can come from simply being together.
