what is your favorite thing about our kitchen table?

- a roommate

“all of our late-night conversations when we accidentally get stuck at the table. we can somehow only start conversations at the table and then can’t move to the comfy couch because the chairs are uncomfortable. but they are so comfortable at the same time. and all of my favorite conversations have happened there”

a place to gather, laugh, work, and eat together

as rickety as it is, this table has held the weight of so many moments — the good and the bad. one of the first symbols of the roommates actually knowing each other lies here every day. a year after moving in, we picked out placemats at the thrift store to match every personality, and somehow i knew exactly what to pick for each person. it’s weird how you just look around one day and realize you’ve made your best friends. placemat day was one of those times for me.

but this table isn’t just the symbol of our closeness — in many ways, it’s one of the main trails that took us there. from bi-weekly roommate dinners to hard conversations to homemade gnocchi to brunch parties to tears and the hardest i’ve laughed in my life, this table is sort of the hub of it all. i couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve plopped down at the end of a long day and vented to the always-listening ears, or i’ve enjoyed a feast of dino nuggets and pasta with some of the most important people in my life.

and not just with my roommates, but with the whole community. the table has held hundreds of cookies at each of our cookie parties, where we make a flyer and send it to invite basically everyone we’ve ever met. the rules to a cookie party are simple, and they’re always the same: bring cookies and bring a friend — we’ll provide the milks and the vibes. the amount of laughter, joy, connection, love, and sweetness that cookie parties bring cannot be underestimated. people begin, around every two months, to ask us when the next one will be. cookie parties are a way for us to connect with a larger community and to show hospitality to everyone.

the cheese incident

one last moment at this table that I could never forget – the cheese incident. my roommate and i had grabbed mcdonalds for dinner and brought it home to eat. we laid everything out on the table, so excited for our food. my roommate was especially excited about her nuggets, but she opened the box, and inside was… melted cheese? the second the lid was lifted, we both dissolved into uncontrollable laughter. i laughed so hard i cried. we left a funny review on google maps (two stars for laughs). that moment became one of my core memories with her.
