the floor couch

a house a home playlist

song #6: this old car by lighthearted

when we first moved into this house, the only seating we had was the floor couch. it was inherited – secondhand – from a family friend, and it had no legs. our living room was bare for a week upon moving in, except for the floor couch. we also had no kitchen table, so meals were exclusively eaten on the floor couch in the living room while watching project runway on a laptop screen (we didn’t have a tv yet, either), eating out of the only dishes we had, which were a set of bowls. we had no plates, so it didn’t matter what the food – sandwiches, pizza, cake – all foods were eaten out of bowls on the floor couch.

we were a little nervous — and we didn’t know each other all that well yet. it was scary sometimes, wondering how life would be if we couldn’t even have a couch with legs.

eventually, more furniture trickled in — we got a table, dishes, tv, and even a real couch, so our poor floor couch was relegated to the basement. but its story doesn’t end there.

one day, we got it in our heads to turn the basement into a movie theater. our singular legless couch had multiplied over time as friends and family heard of our plight and offered to help. since we now had three couches in the basement alone, it only made sense to line them up and project movies on the opposite wall. so we picked up the floor couch to move it and — all of a sudden, we heard a rattle. confused, we opened up the back and found legs stored inside!!

our little floor couch had been a normal couch all along. now it stands proudly with legs and hosts many a deep conversation in the basement. when we have people over, they often convene here to talk about the real parts of life. maybe it’s the floor couch’s humble beginnings — i don’t know. but something about the couch and its story make it the perfect place to talk until sunrise.
